Looking Back at 2003

| | Comments (1)

It has been an eventful year for me.

Professionally

Atlast came back from Hyderabad to Bangalore. Went to Hyderabad from Wipro for a unspecified short duration and ended up staying there for close to 18 months. Quit Wipro and joined Honeywell .

Personally

Except for some minor health issues, it has been good. Started of a bit shaky but now is going good.

2004 Promises to be exciting.

Wishing you an
extremely prosperous,
financially-stable,
debt-free,
investment-profiting,
promotion-assured,
hike-replete,
war-free,
air/water/rail/road-safe,
terrorist-free,
friends-filled,
romance-blooming,
healthy, joyous and cheerful New Year.....

Welcome 2004.

My Blog is Live

| | Comments (3)

After some terrific screw up and spending around 6 hours, My Blog is up and running on Movable Type.

All entries from LJ have been imported. Need to try if i can import the comments. And if everything works fine this should reflect on my LJ account as well.

Its 0525 and the match must be starting. And i need some sleep.

Merry Christmas

|

Wish you all Merry Christmas

Welcome to LJ

|

Please welcome anandsubbu and sivaram_n to LJ.

Anand, is part of the GNOME Foundation and IndLinux group.

Sivaram is a friend of mine at Wipro.

Half Asleep

|

Was getting this error for the past couple of hours when I was trying to start snmpd (net-snmp) on a Solaris box.

"init_kmem: kvm_open failed: Error 0"

Was thinking that either some necessary library was missing or some permission issue. Finally managed to find the reason thanks to Google. Had installed a package meant for Solaris 2.6 on a Solaris 8 box. Shit... Never work when you are half asleep.

Fedora Installed

|

Atlast got some time to install Fedora Core I on my laptop. Looks good.

1. Lilo is gone.
2. The boot up process is now a fancy gui. Not that OK / Failed stuff. So Windows users must like it.

Got drivers for my modem and it works fine. Need to get power management working.

Dont know if i will be able to switch to Linux fully at work. The only major bottle neck seems to be Sametime Client. Rest can be managed.

Let us see where it goes.

From ET:

If you ask the Andhra chief minister's office for a list of Chandra Babu Naidu's engagements next week, you are certain to be told that it is a state secret.

In fact, his security detail is told about them only 24 hours in advance. But shockingly, hackers have been privy to such information weeks in advance. (Do you think Internet has made security lapses easier?)

For six months now, they have been hacking into the CM's mail server and downloading his schedules for 20 days at a time. This includes his engagements, his tours of the districts, the visitors calling on him - in fact, everything he notes down in his diary.

Dravid's Marathon

|

Rahul, the Wall, Dravid

Amazing innings. Every one knows that he is "The Wall". Batting for close to 75 overs and more than 10 hours without any fatigue.

Let us hope India wins this match!

Temples

|

I am back in Bangalore after a pilgrimage to Guruvayoor and Sabarimala. Visits to temple in Kerala keeps me wondering. How do they maintain the temples so clean irrespective of the heavy crowd? Why doesnt this happen in Tamil Nadu.

LB/2003

|

Whole of LJ is being flooded with posts of LB/2003. Mine is here albeit a bit late

Day 1:

Reached IISc at 0945 and there was a bee-line till the entrance of the main complex. Joined the queue and it took almost fifteen minutes to reach the entrance of the complex to be told that this queue was for those who had already registered. Joined the new queue, registered and by the time reached the main hall, the inauguration ceremony had already started.

After the inauguration ceremony, attended atulchitnis talk on Lessons learnt from a German Potato Salad. More people were in just to understand what does a Linux conference has to do with a German potato salad.

Talk of the day was from Nat Friedman and Miguel de Icazaon Low-Cost Linux Desktop Deployments. Two young guys, enthusiastic and passionate about what they do, held the crowd spell bound. Particularly Miguel jumping and running around the stage and making funny comments. No wonder kalyan made this comment about Miguel.

Attended thats talk on Volunteering for Geeks. Then back to the crowd pullers talk on Usability and Innovation: The Gnome Desktop. Next was Taj http://linux-bangalore.org/2003/schedules/talkdetails.php?talkcode=A602.
Skipped the movie Revolution OS and went to office.

Day 2:

First was swatisani talk on A brief introduction to Open source business models. Next was Miguel's talk on The Mono Development Platform . Amazing. He is very energetic, jumping, freaking out. He managed to extend his talk / QA almost until 1230 and everyone was wanting for more. And finally when he came out of the hall, there was a huge crowd surrounding him bombarding him with questions.

Lunch followed by Rasmus Lerdorftalk on Do you PHP? . In the meanwhile, LB/2003 got slashdotted and tariquesani announced it in the hall. He was ecstatic about the set of PHP talks and preaching in front of the God. Rasmus talk was followed by Tarique's talk on ABC of securing PHP code. Skipped Nirav's talk on Smarty - PHP Template Engine for Devdas's talk on Mail hosting solutions. Backup to PHP Guru's talk on Tuning, Benchmarking and Profiling PHP.

Met Sebi and Thangaraju. Introduced Upendera / Mahi to them. Mahi and me then decided to see how the fusion music by Layatharanga was going. Wow! They kept the audience involved and spell bound.

Day 3:

As again was late and attended Kishore Bhargava's talk on Build your own Opensource Firewall. Next was Nirav's talk on Jabber. Nat / Miguel's talk on Rapid Application Development using Mono was amazing. Miguel typed naughty stuff about Nat when he was not seeing and the whole audience enjoyed the bit of entertainment. Demonstrated a few applications (distributed, B2B, highly scalable architecture). Miguel's Migzilla was fun again.

There wasn't much to do in the second half. Either the talks didn't interest me or there was too much of crowd in the halls. Had a meeting at our office at 1700hrs. The meeting got over by 1830 hrs. aivalli told that the Rock show of Phenom hadn't started yet. So i rushed back to IISc. Reaching IISc from Honeywell at Bannerghatta Road in 35 minutes with 16 traffic signals in between is a story by itself. And saw Phenom performing for the first time. These guys rock.

have slept just five hours in the last 48 hours. am going home now. hope i will make it to the LJ meet

Price

|

Filched from FN's post on LIG

A man once asks a pretty young lady, "Will you
sleep with me for ten dollars?"

The lady feels outraged, and shouts back: "What do you
take me for? A prostitute?"

Not giving up, the man says: "Lady, would you
sleep with me for a million dollars?" Suitably
influenced, she says that could be considered.

Comments the man: "Now that we've established
you are indeed a prostitute, the only thing
left to be determined is the price."

From today's ET

The open source world has for long been regarded as the realm of geeks. However, in the last couple of years, the lower cost of ownership has seen increased adoption of open source technologies by corporates and SMEs.

Did you see the latest addition (atleast i have seen it only last week) to Fevicol's TV ads. It goes like this. There is this newly married guy traveling in a train along with his wife. A (beautiful) woman is sitting opposite to him. He dreams as if the lady is calling him and he tries to run towards her but is unable to move. When he comes back to senses, he notices a Fevicol Box next kept next to him....

From Know your English - Today's The Hindu Edition:

When you use B.C. and A.D., where should the numerals come? Before or after B.C. and A.D.?
(Rev. S. C. Jayakumar Coimbatore)

B.C. and A.D. are usually put after the date. For example, according to some people Julius Caesar died on 15 March 44 B.C. When the history of the world comes to be rewritten several hundred years from now, chances are "BBB" and "ABB" will be added to the lexicon. "Before Bush and Blair" and "After Bush and Blair".

Updates

|

Updates about my laptop
Hard disk re-partitioned.
All required software installed.
Cygwin installed and configured. Had a minor glitch getting it up. But works like a charm.

Need to install Red Hat. But guess will wait for a week before going ahead. If i need to work on linux, need to buy VMware since a few applications i need to use daily runs only on Windows. Still a long way to go.

I have a lappy

|

Dell Latitude D600 I have got a new laptop sponsored by my Company. Its a Dell Latitude D600

Have been damn busy since I got the laptop yesterday. Hence could not fiddle much. Knoppix 3.1 (supplied with LFY) works fine. Have some glitches with PCMCIA. Need to do some RTFM / STFW.

More updates soon.

The first one is a two part story on "The Art of Blogging" and the second one is from A List Apart about How to Write a Better Weblog.

Interesting read.

When it rains, it pours!

Today evening it rained so heavily that the roads here, JP nagar / Bannerghata Road was almost flooded. Add this to the fscked Bannerghatta road, a drive on bike will take you directly to hell.

When will the authorities wake up?

Personality Analysis

|

Your Existing Situation

Feels obstructed in his desires and prevented from obtaining the things he regards as essential.

Your Stress Sources

Unfulfilled hopes have led to uncertainty and apprehension. Needs to feel secure and to avoid any further disappointment, and fears being passed over or losing standings and prestige. Doubts that things will be any better in the future and this negative attitude leads him to make exaggerated demands and to refuse to make reasonable compromises.

Your Restrained Characteristics

Able to achieve satisfaction through sexual activity but is inclined to be emotionally withdrawn, which prevents him from becoming deeply involved.

Egocentric and therefore quick to take offense. Sensitive and sentimental, but conceals this from all except those very close to him.

Your Desired Objective

Wants to establish himself and make an impact despite unfavorable circumstances and a general lack of appreciation.

Your Actual Problem

Disappointment and the fear that there is no point in formulating fresh goals have led to anxiety. Desires recognition and position, but is worried about his prospects. Reacts to this by protecting at any criticism and resisting any attempt to influence him. Tries to assert himself by meticulous control of detail in an effort to strengthen his position.

Happy Birthday Bapu

A colleague from US asked me "Why is today a holiday?".
Me: Today is the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi is the father of our nation.
He: Ok. So what do you today?
Me: !@#$@#$

A thought provoking question. What did I do? Since i am working in the night, spent most part of the day sleeping and came to office. Is this the essence of such national holidays?

Thinking...

Hindu runs a eight page feature titled The Mahatma and THE HINDU as a part of its 125th anniversary celebrations.

SMS Spam?

Got this SMS a few days back.

"Dear Suvidha Customer. Congratulations. You are now eligible for a Citibank Personal Loan of Rs.100000. Interested? Reply YES to this great offer now" from +919845202484

I am subscribed to the Citibank's CitiAlert Service which alerts me on my account information. But does registering to such a service automatically gives priviliege to Citibank to send me such SMS. Isnt this spam?

Citibank Privacy Promise says
We will limit the collection and use of customer information to the minimum we require to deliver superior service to our customers, which includes advising our customers about our products, services and other opportunities, and to administer our business.
and also
We will tell customers in plain language initially, and at least once annually, how they may remove their names from marketing lists. At any time, customers can contact us to remove their names from such lists.

Not sure if i should report this. Or working in night shifts turning me paranoid?

9/11 - My memories

|

We were in our office that evening troubleshooting some software installation when our TM asked "Hey! It seems some major bomb blast in the US! Any news about it!". All major news sites weren’t accessible probably due to the heavy load. And we continued to work. Some time later, he told that a major disaster had struck in the US and the Twin towers have been hit by a couple of planes. I rushed home to see the shocking terror. And the whole scene unfolded.

Two years down the line. still remember Bush's "Freedom itself is attacked...." and "We here you...." speeches. But, what is the outcome? Has the "War on Terror" succeeded? No idea if there will be any answers.

My XML-RPC Client

Hey Folks, This is from a XML-RPC client I am trying out. At this moment everything is mostly hardcoded, but I guess I can improve this.
Hope this is just the begining and I continue working on this. :-)

I am pretty addicted, but there is hope. I think I'm just well connected to the internet and technology, but it's really a start of a drug-like addiction. I must act now! Unplug this computer!

My Website is up. Currently it points to my journal on LJ. balaji. More updates later. Please book mark www.balajin.net and drop in when you have time.

Blug Meet

|

It was the Blug meet today. The theme was Real Time Linux. As usual reached there only by 1915 hrs. There was a whopping crowd of 175. Surjo told that this was one of the all time highest. I wanted to see ROAMER in action. Mrinal and his mates gave a demo of ROAMER. Fantastic stuff built with materials available in Sunday Market except for the Sound senor!

Grabbed a good(!?*) dinner and back.

PS: The BLUG meet clashes with the Fun Friday we have in our office. Fun Friday is on the last Friday of every month and BLUG on the fourth Friday of every month. What to do?

Tomorrow, July 25, is System Administrator Appreciation Day - A special day, once a year, to acknowledge the worthiness and appreciation of the person occupying the role, especially as it is often this person who really keeps the wheels of your company turning.

Fellow Sysadmins. Its your day tomorrow. Enjoy and Have Fun. And don’t plan for any shutdown tomorrow and eventually screw up your weekend :-)

balajin.net

|

Just registered balajin.net. It shows up in the whois of Melbourne IT who are the partners of net4domains. So, its some time before the DNS gets propagates, I guess.

Now the second phase starts. To look for hosting space. At this moment, EnvisionT Information Services looks dirt-cheap. May be will go with this to start with and look for alternates.

Any recommendations?

And then starts the most difficult part. Content.

"Content is the King. Bandwidth is the queen".

Working at Night

|

Have worked most part of this week in the night shifts from 1800hrs to 0600hrs. Though its cool working in the night without disturbance, sound music and at your pace, the article today in Economic times about night shifts has scared me a bit. Also there is the phone calls in the day, a marketing guy stopping by to sell his junk, my flat neighbor doing some masonry work which disturbs your sleep in the day. Need to strike a balance if this is going to continue. And for now good night (good morning to you all) for me.

Still haven’t recovered from my mobile loss yesterday. Got up only at 1300hrs. Had a stomach full of aloo parathas and some chapathis at Tasty Bites. Tried ringing up my mobile number and it always says "Switched Off". Need to buy a new one and as usual am stuck for cash. :-(

PS: If you live around Jayanagar or JP Nagar area, don’t forget to check out Tasty Bites next to Shanthi Sagar. A fantastic eat out for simple north Indian food.

On the way from my office to home, my mobile fell down. It is raining slightly. I tried walking all the way but couldn't locate it. It was ringing sometime back but now says "Switched off". Someone is lucky and me!@#$%. A bad evening.

This is more of a proclamation.

The ITRC forums of HP is one place where I get to learn a lot on HP Unix. An interactive forum where there are no RTFM'sor STFW and the forumers take enough time and patience to explain. No, I don't mean to hurt others, but this is one place where I love to hang around.

Going to Chennai...

|

Charan's Marriage is on Sunday. Shan, Sriram and me are traveling to Chennai. Last week I tried for the train tickets but it was fully booked. Just now Sriram called up to say that buses are also full. What to do? Walk down to Majestic tomorrow and try out our luck!

Featureprice.com which hosts the irtt.org mail server is down again. This company has been bought by Atlantic.net sometime back. But today there is a message which says that all features hosted by Feature price are currently down. The options are to migrate to plans offered by Atlantic.net or host the site elsewhere. And that there is know guarantee given by Atlantic when the site will be up. Is this is a marketing gimmick by Atlantic to force all subscribers to their hosting plans? Below is an extract from their web page.

If you are on a Platinum or Premium Plan:
We will honor the remainder of your prepaid service if you remain with Feature Price or if you switch to one of Atlantic.Nets web hosting plans. Please click here to view and signup for one of Atlantic.Net's Web hosting plans.

If you are on a Mini or Budget Plan:
We will honor your prepaid service through August 1, 2003 if you remain with Feature Price or if you switch to one of Atlantic.Net's web hosting plans. You will need to start paying for your hosting account after August 1st 2003 you will not be charged for July if you switch now. Please click here to view and signup for one of Atlantic.Net's Web hosting plans.

Luckily, we are in the Platinum plan and the subscription is valid till September. Even, if we need to move the hosting to some other ISP, we still don't have control over the domain. Awaiting information from Shan for further course of action.

Have joined Honeywell yesterday. And on to work from the first day. More later.

Good Bye Wipro

"All but Death, can be Adjusted-
Dynasties repaired-
Systems-settled in their Sockets-
Citadels-dissolved-

Wastes of Lives-resown with Colors

Death-unto itself-Exception-

Friday (June 27, 2003) was my last day at Wipro. It has been a great experience working here. My first job as a Systems Administrator. Though I had been using Linux on and off since sometime in 1999, it was at Wipro where i got to work more on HP Unix and specifically Linux. Sometime since August 2001, I have been using a desktop running RedHat Linux. Except for those heavy Microsoft Word documents and a few badly coded web sites, I have been able to manage most of the stuff with my Linux box.

A journey down the memory lane...

New Technologies learned, A short but productive stint at Wipro, My first overseas trip to Finland, The Linux Wipro Mailing list, Lots of new friends, The interactions at TwinCLinG, the Twin Cities Linux Users Group,...

Thank you, Wipro.

Filmy Weekend

|

Spending this weekend watching movies. Watched The Lord of the Rings - Twin Towers, yesterday morning. Friday was Mani's birthday and he treated us at Pizza Hut, Brigade Road, yesterday night. Watched Kadhal Sadugu (Tamil - Actor Vikram) yesterday night. Was the usual love story and we could guess the complete story in five minutes. Today morning watched Anbe Sivam. A great movie. And i always wanted to watch this film. Will locate and upload the review of this movie written by Sivaram tomorrow.

Am now waiting for Raghu to wander around Jayanagar 4th Block.

Bowling at Amoeba

|

Yesterday was our self sponsored outing trip. Everyone from out team had been to the Amoeba Bowling Alley at Church street. Me as usual was the last one to arrive (since i was at Electronics City the whole day). By the time i was there, half the team had already left. But what makes me write this here is that it is my highest score(89) in my third attempt at bowling. Two weeks back, when Raki, Vimal and me had been to Star City, it was a horrendous performance. I could just manage 37 points then. I am improving...

The Matrix Reloaded

|

This saturday had been to Urvasi to watch The Matrix Reloaded. Generally I never go to a theater to watch a movie. But, since this movie was the talk of the town and there were talks about nmap being used in the movie to exploit a server, I went. The screen shots of nmap being used are here.

The slow motion and frame freeze during fights, Background Music, Maritial Arts, etc. make the movie more exciting. Trinity driving the motorbike facing oncoming traffic topped it all

Kollywood (the tamil film industry) and its viewers must be happy to see familiar scenes like "Parandhu Parandhu Sanda podradhu" of Rajini fame, "Kambu Sandai" (the pole fight), etc.

A nice movie and a must watch.

Linux and the usual Q's

|

Met one gentleman who works at a consulting firm at the Venkateswara temple (at JP Nagar, II phase). What started as a simple hi / hello conversation ended up in me explaining about advantages of using Linux. They don't have a local mail server and are using the services provided by an ISP (shit! i forgot the name). The service provider charges are based on per mail sent per mail box and a mail from one user to another user in the same company travels all the way to UK! Amazing. Tried explaining about setting up a mail server running linux locally. His company was thinking of setting up an Exchange server but when i told all that he wants could be done using Linux and could be managed better at a low cost, he was impressed. Next, he told that he was unable to find a competent person to do this. Standard response when there is a talk about linux. I have invited him for this months BLUG meet to see all for himself. Let us hope he turns out.

PS: There wasn't much sleep this weekend. (>12 hours a day :-) ).

Chennai....

|

Hmm...Been to Chennai this week. Terribly hot. Couldn't venture out. Mostly stayed indoors. Dont understand how those in Chennai manage. Thank God, I am out of Hyderabad and back in Bangalore. That is another hell (can hear Hyderabadis yelling) and with the water crisis, makes it tougher.

PS: Met Violinist A Kanyakumari on the bus and got an autograph.

Lots Happening

|

First of all moved to ITPL since last Friday. Back into the same project which I was working earlier in hyderabad. Live in JP Nagar. Tried coming by Bike today to office but not very sure how long i will be able to continue. Read this from jace.

This months BLUG meet was about Open Source Databases. Though i missed the initial talks by Biju, the meet and the food was great. Shiv Senthilvel's talk on A Business Case for switching to an OSS DB system was an icing.

Been planning to learn Perl since long but never made it. Atlast there was a three day training on Perl and managed to attend it. Hope this gives me a head start.

Yesterday had been to Sparks along with Suresh.Guess this is my first outing around the Brigade Road area after coming to Bangalore some time in Feb.:-(. The music was good.

Let me start my drive back home now.

Weekend...

|

Friday night was fun. Vimal had been to some party and there was a magic (tricks?) show there. After the show was over, the magician had given those tricky tools to the audience. One of them Vimal brought, was a nail puzzle. Objective of the puzzle is to split the two nails separately and join them back. Initially everyone tried and it seemed impossible. But the solution was simple.

Sunday was Dr.Balamuralikrishna's special music concert at Fort High School, Chamrajpet as part of the Ramanavami celebrations of Sree Rama Seva Mandali. It was Excellent. What more can i say?

my college email id which i have been using till now has gone. i have not been receiving any mail at this id for the past few days and today shan told that featureprice.com which hosts irtt.org and the mail service is shutting down. there is no news on their web site but this site shows this info. So in case you are trying to reach me use my yahoo id balajijegan (at) yahoo (dot) com.

Time to register a domain and sign up with an ISP for web space / mail service. :-(

It was Umesh's marriage yesterday. Six of us (Jayanna, Nagesh, Ramnath, Satish, Suresh and me) hired a Tata Sumo and started our journey to Siricare, 20 kms from Chitradurga . We were to leave by 0600 hrs but thanks to the some wonderful planning by Jayanna, were delayed by an hour :-(

Jayanna had seen a cat cross the road when he had started and that is considered a bad omen. So he had given strict instructions to our driver not to speed more than 60 km/hr. With pounding hearts, partly due to the "Cat effect" and thanks to some excellent (!) driving by our young driver, we finally managed to reach the marriage hall around 1245 (the marriage muhurtham was at 1110).

Ganna and Saeed had come down from Hyderabad for the marriage. After the customary wishes and lunch, we started off back at around 1445. Initially we had plans of visiting Chandravalli, but dropped. All our thoughts were about reaching home safely. Jayanna dropped out at Chitradurga as he was going for one of his relatives marriage and Nagesh at Tumkur. Atlast when I reached home it was almost 2100hrs. No idea if Ramnath managed his way to his village (don't remember the name) near Mathikarai.

At Coimbatore...

|

Had a tough time getting a bus ticket to Coimbatore yesterday. Thought will walk down to KPN / Sharma as usual and get a ticket, but did not materialize. Even tried the KSRTC buses and they were full. Finally managed to get a TNSTC bus to Coimbatore. Veerappan came into my mind the moment the conductor told that the bus will go via Mysore / Sathyamangalam. It was a tough journey and when I finally reached home, spent the whole day sleeping. Hmm...
